Abstract:

A survey of the Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus was carried out at a pre-nesting staging ground in Finnmark county, Northern Norway. A method for individual identification by differences in the markings of the belly patches of each individual was tested through seven field seasons. The belly patches of each individual were accurately drawn, and comparing these, no individuals turned out to have a similar pattern of patches. The method was found to be of significance in the monitoring of the Lesser White-fronted Goose population at the staging ground. By this method we were able to calculate the total number of geese staging in the area, and it revealed an overall turnover of individuals throughout the staging season. Individual identification is invaluable for monitoring the small and threatened population of Lesser White-fronted Goose in Fennoscandia. The results of this monitoring work during a five year period are presented in this paper. It shows that the population numbers vary some-what from year to year, but that the population trend has been relatively stable in this period.
