Abstract:

Within the framework of the National Action Plan (hereafter NAP) for the globally threatened Lesser White-fronted Goose Anser erythropus developed in the republic of Kazakhstan between 2011 and 2012, a number of measures are planned for the forthcoming three years (2012–2014). On the basis of scientific data received on this species in the last decades, and making use of available experience from other countries, it is proposed to carry out a variety of practical activities regarding goose protection, in particular in order to reduce the negative influence of a number of anthropogenic factors upon Lesser White-fronted Goose, in particular the influence of hunting on this protected species. Considering that implementation of such plans have not previously been applied to the fauna of Kazakhstan, this NAP will serve as a model as to how to implement effective management of other species and populations in order to reduce and eliminate negative factors affecting biodiversity and habitat.

Abstract:

Waterfowl migration was observed at the Gilyovskoye water reservoir in Lifliandskiy nature refuge (zakaznik) on 4–29 April and from 25 September till 25 October 2012. The first lesser white-fronted geese (five individuals in the bean goose fl ock and three more in pintail fl ock) arrived on 5 April. Five more lesser white-fronted geese were observed on 13 April. In autumn, the first record of the species was made on 1 October (a fl ock of 25 birds). Small groups of white-fronted geese were noted in the flocks of bean geese from time to time up to 31 October. According to our estimate and opinion of the local hunters and game managers, 450 to 500 lesser white-fronted geese passed over the Gilyovskoye reservoir in the period between 1 October and 8 November 2012.

Abstract:

In November 2012, a survey to the important Lesser White-fronted Goose (later LWfG) areas revealed by satellite tracking in 2006 and 2012 was carried out in Southern Russia. Nearby location-sites, concerning LWfG breeding population in Norway, from 2006, we found six adult individuals feeding and four adult individuals migrating in the Volgograd Region. In the area revealed by fresh satellite plot locations in 2012, from LWfG breeding in Yamal Peninsula, Russia, we observed 19, 77 and 68 individuals respectively when roosting and feeding at Chograyskoye Reservoir in Regions of Kalmykia and Stavropol Krai. As a minimum 80 LWfG were roosting here during the survey. In the report, descriptions of located areas, list of visited points with travelling schedule, and also observations of other interesting species for the area are included.
