Abstract:
The catastrophic decline in the abundance and the reduction in the range of the Lesser White-fronted goose Anser erythropus caused it to be included in the list of "globally threatened" species (Tucker and Heath 1994). In this regard, the clarification of the current state of the Eastern European population of the Lesser White-fronted Goose seems to be very urgent. Until now, information on the distribution, abundance and biology of the Lesser White-fronted Goose in the Eastern European tundra remains scarce. According to summarizing reports, the main breeding area of the species in the European part of Russia is located in the Bolshe-Zemstvo tundra (Mineev Yu. 1989; Morozov 1995). In recent years, nesting of the Lesser White-fronted Goose has also been established in the Malozemelskaya tundra (Mineev O., Mineev Yu. 2004). Due to insufficient exploration of the territory, the available data do not provide a complete picture of the modern range and abundance of the Lesser White-fronted Goose in the Eastern European tundra.
