Piskulka.net with new functionality!

With increasing amounts of data it was now due time for some updated functionality for displaying these on maps. It is now possible to show the recent observation data on map. You’re taken with the chosen selection to the Distribution-page where you have additional options to select and view the observation-data. You can now choose individual years or even seasons. If you just tick off after “Season”, the selected dataset will be shown with matching colors for seasonality. A neat feature for understanding the life cycle of the Lesser White-fronted Goose.

Lesser White-fronted Goose LIFE+ Project Team meets in Greece

The project team of the current EU LIFE+ project “Safeguarding the Lesser White-fronted Goose Fennoscandian population in key wintering and staging sites within the European flyway” came together 29-31 January 2014 at the Evros Delta in Greece for its second coordination meeting in order to take stock of progress made and to prepare for the project’s midterm report due in March 2014.

To kick-off the meeting, the Norwegian Ornithological Society provided a general overview on the current status of the Fennoscandian population, while the project partners reported on the implementation of their activities, for example concerning the regulation of hunting and patrolling in designated sites used by the Lesser White-fronted Geese in Greece and Bulgaria. The lead project partner, the Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS) reported in particular on the implementation of a so-called smart patrolling system which involves monitoring patrols and video surveillance of key areas used by the geese. Breeding Conditions Survey on Arctic Birds 2011

A review of bird breeding conditions in the Arctic in 2011 was recently made available for downloading at the websites of the Arctic Birds Breeding Conditions Survey, a project of the International Wader Study Group (http://www.arcticbirds.net and http://www.arcticbirds.ru; direct link Review 2011» ).

To this moment all available data for season 2012 and the first portion of data for season 2013 were published on the survey websites. In January 2014 we aim to prepare a review of bird breeding conditions in the Arctic in 2012, and would very much appreciate receiving all still not submitted data before the end of 2013.
